MAINTENANCE SECTOR

DIFFERENT TYPES OF MAINTENANCE

There are different types of maintenance : corrective maintenance, preventive maintenance which can be systematic or condition-based.

Corrective maintenance

This kind of maintenance is performed after a failure and the goal is to make the device able to operate and complete a given task. We also call it « repairs ».

It can be used :

  • as the only method when damaged equipment doesn't have major consequences on production process or when there are minor safety constraints ;
  • as an added solution towards preventive maintenance in case of some residual failures .

Systematic preventive maintenance

Preventive maintenance is scheduled according to a predetermined time of usage or number of units of usage. This kind of maintenance implies regular inspections and scheduled tasks.
This type of maintenance is particularly suited to :

  • Equipment with failure that can have serious consequences on the safety of goods and people.
  • Equipment with high maintenance costs.
  • Equipment that needs a long time for shutoff or start.
  • Equipment under specific regulation

This maintenance ensures the limitation of serious damages and the reduction of unexpected failures.

Preventive maintenance

The goal of this kind of maintenance is to reduce the likelihood of failures of a device or the degradation of a service
It is performed while the equipment is still working so that it does not break down unexpectedly, and it implies inspection, controls and audits.

The objective :

  • to limit non-scheduled maintenance
  • To facilitate maintenance managing
  • To promote calendar-based maintenance
  • To set up spare parts stock preparation, organization and management
  • To limit failures before breakdown, and the possible damages caused by unexpected repeated failures
  • To improve safety
  • To increase productivity

Condition-based preventive maintenance

It is a preventive maintenance that depends on a specific type of a predetermined event that will estimate the degradation state of an item.

Objectives :

  • To limit spare parts handling that can cause damages
  • To improve the safety of goods and people
  • To limit emergency repairs thanks to early fault detection creating optimal conditions for maintenance operations.
